Profitable eBay flipping: how to run a reselling business
Author: Prolisto Team · Last updated: · 4 min read

eBay flipping is simple to describe: buy stock for less than it sells for, list it on eBay, and keep the difference. Making it profitable at volume is harder. The margin has to survive eBay's fees, postage, returns and the time it takes to list every item.
This guide walks through the steps of a flipping business, from research to dispatch, and where automation saves the most time once you're handling hundreds of items a week.
What is eBay flipping?
eBay flipping is buying products below their resale value and selling them on eBay for a profit. Resellers buy from wholesalers, clearance and liquidation sales, returns pallets, job lots and trade suppliers, then list each item individually or in useful bundles.
The skill is knowing what an item will sell for before you buy it, and keeping your cost per listing low enough that small margins still add up.
Step 1: Research what sells
Base every buying decision on what has actually sold, not on asking prices. On eBay, filter a search by Sold items to see recent selling prices and how often an item sells. An item that sells every day at a steady price is safer than one that sold once at a high price.
Look at:
- Sell-through. How many have sold recently compared with how many are listed.
- Price range. The typical sold price, not the highest.
- Competition. How many sellers list the same item, and at what prices.
- Condition. Used, refurbished and new items sell at very different prices.
Step 2: Source stock at the right cost
Buying cheaply is where the profit is made. Common sources for resellers:
- Wholesalers and trade suppliers for steady, repeatable stock.
- Retail clearance and liquidation stock, including customer returns.
- Job lots and bulk buys, where a few strong items can pay for the whole lot.
Work out your maximum buying price before you commit: the expected sold price, minus eBay fees, postage, packaging and an allowance for returns. Our free eBay profit calculator does this sum for you.
With bulk lots, expect some items that aren't worth listing. Decide in advance what's too cheap to list, so low-value items don't take up shelf space and staff time.
Step 3: Create listings buyers can find
A good listing is found in search and answers the buyer's questions before they ask:
- Title. Brand, model, size, colour and condition, using the words buyers search for.
- Item specifics. Fill in every relevant one: eBay uses them in search filters.
- Photos. Good light, several angles and close-ups of any marks or damage.
- Description. Honest condition notes reduce returns and "not as described" cases.
Step 4: Price after fees and postage
Check recent sold prices, then make sure the price still leaves a margin after eBay's selling fees and postage. Best Offer can help items sell when buyers want to negotiate, and you can set automatic accept and decline levels so you only see the offers worth considering.
Prices don't stay put. Competitors relist, undercut and sell out, so a price that was right last month may now be too high or too low.
Step 5: Dispatch quickly
Fast, tracked dispatch protects your feedback and your seller rating. Choose services that match the handling time on your listings, and use tracked services for anything valuable so you're covered if a buyer reports an item as not received.
Step 6: Scale the business
Once the basics work, growth comes from:
- A niche. Specialising in a category, such as books and media, video games, clothing or car parts, builds buying knowledge and repeat customers.
- Seasonality. Buy ahead of the months your category sells best.
- More channels. The same stock can sell on Amazon, Discogs or your own website as well as eBay.
- eBay's promotion tools. Promoted Listings, offers to watchers and multi-buy discounts.
Where automation saves time
At a few items a week, flipping can be done by hand. At hundreds or thousands, listing, repricing and dispatch become most of the work. This is where Prolisto helps resellers:
- Fast listing. Scan a barcode or photograph an item and Prolisto builds the listing: title, category, item specifics, description, photos and price. Fast product listing.
- Automated pricing. Prolisto checks competitors' active and sold prices on eBay and Amazon and reprices every listing within the floors and ceilings you set. Automated pricing.
- A blocklist for low-value items. Built from your own sales data, it flags items that aren't worth listing at the moment you scan them. Low-value item blocklist.
- Stock and shelf locations. Every item has a shelf location, and stock syncs across eBay, Amazon, Discogs, WooCommerce and ShopBlocks. Inventory management.
- eBay HTML templates. Titles, prices and photos fill into your template automatically when you list. eBay HTML templates.
- Dispatch. Orders from every channel in one list, with labels printed in batches through Royal Mail, Whistl, DHL, Deutsche Post and Amazon Easy Ship. Order fulfilment.
